Well had a great time on my B-day with Brandn, Patty, and Micah up in Crowley. While I wouldn't say this is a must hit course...it is a fun course to play. Starts out fairly open, but gets into some pretty tight stuff through the middle before opening up again at the end. Lot's of elevation, lots of up and down walking. Overall a fun course that plays waaay better in these calm and hot conditions rather than the freezing super wind Patty and myself played in about 3 years ago.
Heading down to Jellystone National Park this weekend to see Yogi and Bubu. Played the course last year...wasn't a must hit or anything, but it's worth playing if you are ever at Jellystone for a kids weekend.
Got to check 2 more courses as played this weekend. Brownfield is a very nice park, very clean and well maintained (or at least these guys put their best foot forward for sure). The course is pretty long from the white tees, several shots round the 400-430 range with one downhiller that is 600(somehow I got a 3 both times). There is a pretty good mix of lefty and right holes. Over all very fun course...
Once the last round in Brownfield was done, and since I blew making payout, we bolted pretty much as it was done so we could play Lamessa's course on the way home. Man I gotta tell you, you would not except this course in Lamessa!! This park is FULL of big, mature trees...from pecans, to oaks, to some kind of ash trees I'm guessing. And when I say full...I MEAN FULL!!! There is really only 1 open hole and it's 1000' throwing downhill. Overall the course played really good, and was fun even after stopping for an extra round on the way home from a tourney weekend. My only complaint would be all the trash in the park...Think the lake course after Easter almot.
Anyway, both courses are well worth playing if you are in either Brownfield or Lamessa.
BTW- these were courses 59 and 60 on my played list!
Well I have to add one on there...Roy G! Very well laid out and has a variety of shots on most holes. It has very long holes up to 800' to short ones around 270'. It is tight, but not insane like bible ridge or manor. It has very good fairways, but if you r not in it u r in trouble. I played wilco, bible ridge, and Roy g....and out of all them Roy g was my fav. I shot a 71 and 70 which is not great but par is 61.
Yep I agree with Jason. Both courses were great and worth a day drive to hit both. Lamesa's park was definitely a suprise, to go from flat land with nothng to look at to a huge wooded park with massive trees and green maintained grass. Like Jason said the trash was an eyesore. It looked like they had had some cross country event there recently and the trash came from that. Ovrall both courses were great.
All they did at wilco was some major upkeep. They removed some trees that died and other trees that opened it up a bit more. Overall, it hasn't changed much...besides alot of briar and small brushes cleaned out. Roy g is an awesome course!
I like that you can be slightly off at Roy G and still make it somewhat down there...where as biblerigde is so unforgiving. Plus, bibleridge you really don't have many holes where you can ript it...it is more straight fairway golf. Both are good, both are challenging, but I like the lay out of Roy G more.
So Friday we played Turner Park in Grape Vine. This course was a really fun course to play. Lot's of elevation and some good boomer holes. The setting was more of a multi-use park, kind of Brentwood like(but not in play). I'd say if you want a clean easy to follow course this is one you should play!
Saturday we tried to play Gateway, this was more of a cut out of the rough course. We only played 12 holes before we decided we were to sore for disc golf to be fun any more. But the first 12 holes were a lot of fun. They started off kind of short and tight, then had some long stuff and some long tight stuff. Patty tried to talk spanish to a few mexicans picking up pecans...they thought their pecans were more imporatant that getting hit by a disc so they paid no attention to us(or they couldn't understand Patty one). This course was pretty hard to follow with some pretty goo walks between holes, and the teeboxes will throw you off as they don't all face the same way. Holes 1 and 2 are backwards from what most teeboxes are, then there are a couple that face right, then back to wrong. There is also a long walk between 9 and 10, and again at 11. After that I couldn't tell you as we left after hole 12. I'd like to go back sometime and play it again when I felt like playing disc golf that's for sure!
Gateway is a good course, from what I played. I would like to go back when I can actually hold a disc, and my back and shoulders do not feel like tenderized meat. As far as the Hispanics, no I did not try to speak Spanish, just tried not to hit a small child. If your in ft worth, you should visit gateway.
Courses #66 and #67 this weekend....neither of which are what I would call destination courses, if you are in the area they are both worth playing.
The first was Colorado City, it's a short 9 hole course that is mostly open short lefty throws(Coby kicked ass on it). There was one hole that was on top of a large dirt mound and then the next hole was the only one you could really throw hard on. If you are traveling down the interstate and need a break...it would be a nice park to stop, play a quick 9 and get back on the road.
We were going to also do Snyder, but they had a big Cinco De Mayo deal going on so we went over to Abilene to check out Johnson Park. This was a good trainning course for how to work your discs down fairways. Baically some undeveloped land that they took a bulldozer and cleared out lines to throw down. It did seem to get a little repetitive, but still fun. To bad the lake doesn't come into play. But speaking of the lake, it was kind of suprising...didn't know Abilene had a lake like it. I would imagine if you lived in Abilene this course would be a nice change up from Cal Young.
All and all it was a fun one day disc golf road trip with a couple of good buddies exploring new courses...ended with some good Spanish food(since Junior says Abuelo's isn't Mexican food)and a few good margaritas!
Abuelo's would be American Mexican food...not Mexican American food. You know the difference....Armenta's or Hidalgo's versus...Abuelo's. Just like Dickey's bbq over Lum's. Same concept.
You are crazy...I eat a lot, I MEAN A LOT...but a large from there is just to much! Patty couldn't finish it. But I do love their hot sauce! I like to get a small and a pizza most times, but a medium is just fine if only a sandwhich.
