Im all for it. There just doesnt seem to be as much interest here. One of my goals for next year is to push Texas Teams a little more. Hopefully our spring team event will get folks more interested in the team concept.
If you can talk them into it just once, I bet you wouldn't have to do much talking from them on. It's the most fun tourney I have ever been to.
If you were 40 I'd of been hitting you up to join us, and fill our Open Masters spot. As it is now Carl will go there and Franky will go adv. masters to fill our "swing spot".
Have to wait until 2014 for that :-) Hopefully, we can get a team together next year. I think we could have a really competative team. Do you have to start in a certain division if its your first year?
It's not to late for this year Jerry....it's still over a month away! Just make it happen!!!
No you do not have to start in a certain division. We just don't have any real true pros here in S.A. so that's why we have been playing in the 6 man emerging(for towns with no pros) and merged(for teams that have won emerging, or towns that are brining an established team) divisions the last 2 years. Since we won merged last year we figured it was time to move up. JR's team is playing merged still.
But yeah, I think you guys could put together a very good team. Plus it would be cool to have a few more familiar faces around.
There was actually a team there last year from "Abilene".
Yeah...I think 1 guy was from Abilene. I talked to people and no one really knew any of them. I might ask around and see if we could scrounge a team up for this year. I think its going to take involvment in a team event (the one Im propsing for next year) to build a foundation to get folks interested. But, who knows :-)
I can't remember how many were from Abilene...but it seems like most lived in Austin at the time, but most were went to school in Abilene at one point or another.
I bet if you guys wanted you could put together a 6 man team, depending on ratings that is. The 9 man is a little harder to get together. It may not be so hard for you guys though.
The new pin placements are working out nicely and the feedback has been pretty positive. Were going to try and get #9 and #14 out of their sleeves when it gets colder. We may have to end up digging them out and forcing the sleeves off. If we do that we will likely use the sleeves from #2 and #4 at Will Hair that we are going to have to dig up. My goal is to have all the baskets movable (except #16) by the Ice Bowl. I also have a super long position in mind for #12. Last Firday, Santos shot a -14, even with a bogey on #2. Needless to say, thats the best so far.
We are going to start figuring out tee pad placments for Will Hair in the next few months. My goal is to have locations staked out so the city can pour the pads after the first of the year.
The club documents to get the West Texas Disc Twisters going again are almost done. I need to get with Joe Simpson to see how much longer it will be, but ideally I would like to have something in place so by Jan/Feb we can have some elections and establish officers.
This past Sat, we had our first semi-random draw doubles mini and it did exactly what it was supposed to do. We split "A" players and "B" players, then draw from there so we make sure and have balanced teams. The results were 2 teams at -11, one -10, one -9, one -8, and 2 at -7. We wanted to get doubles teams more competative and I think we found a way to do that.
2009 Cal Young Expansion: After meeting with the Rotary Club we have decided not to hold a Series of events next year, but instead totally focus on the Mayors Cup Team event. The Rotary Club seems to operate better if they focus on one big event and they already have a Spring event, so we are going to hold the Mayor's Cup in the Fall...probably October. I think we will still hold a smaller event series within the club, but it wont be officially apart of the Expansion Project. We will simply use it to raise money for a club donation. Details as I get them.
From talking to Junior sounds like you guys set this course up for him and Santos(and all other lefties). Can't wait to give them a try....hopefully it's before the Ice Bowl, but if not I'll make it up for that to give them a go.
Looking forward to details on the Mayors Cup!(I'm guessing that's the team event you were talking about?)
The problem here when we tried to do stuff by A and B players, no one wanted to say they were B players. We tried to do singles that way, having an A and B division...we'd get 2 or maybe 3 that wanted to go B and 12 or 14 saying they were going A.
Those guys have had some pretty good rounds there so far. I would like to think that when its all long and all short....it will be balanced. Right now the total course length is probably shorter than the old course set up. So more people should, on average, shoot lower scores overall when they get used to the holes. Santos had only shot -9 before he broke out with a -14....he was just totally on that day. We will really see how it plays when we start moving the baskets on a regular basis. There are also many more trees I want to get out there.
We let everyone know upfront that the decision on whos A and whos B would be totally up to TD....and to not get offended. Its very possible for one person to be a B player one week, and be an A player the next week. Its all about balancing teams...nothing personal. So get over it :-) If it doesnt work out, we'll try something else.
The Mayors Cup is the team event.
I know your not exactly thrilled about Will Hair going concrete...just about everyone here is in favor of it. That, plus signage out there will hopefully help to get more traffic on that course. Its really been an afterthought since it was installed.
Junior had to call me the day he took your tag up there(or was it his tag back?). You'd of thought he won the lotto or something!!! He was trying to descibe all the new placements. 12 sounds interesting for sure. No more hyzer skipping off the street right, it's off to the right of the road now? Are the islands still in-bounds? Meaning you can land up by were the old placement was and still be in, just shooting across the road? And it sounds like 3 was a good move since you were kind of throwing close to 4s box as it was. Like I said I can not wait to give them a try.
That probably is a good way to do it. Just have one voice saying you are this and you are that. The way we did it, no one wanted to admit they were a "B" player....well other than me trying to I was(and actually probably am), but no one bought it. :P
You know me well...I am not a concrete fan, but a lot of people are. Since we have put in our concrete at Picnic most of the tread has disappeared from my Bites. And really when they are wet, they are more slick than the flypads at Brentwood...and definitely not as cushy! But there is no matinece once they are poured so there are up sides to them. At any rate it won't stop me from coming to the Wild Hair that's for sure. It was my first real tourney(heardimore being the actual first), and the first year of the Wild Hair. I plan to make it forever.
I think he actually took his tag back from Gary. If I remember right, they both had tags lower than me...but he did beat my score that day. Either way...he was pumped, not sure he had ever beat me before.
12 is off to the right now...we will probably make the islands OB for tournaments. Is not a difficult 3, but theres much risk-reward factor if you go for the 2. The super-long position I have in mind will go along that same right side all the way up close to 13 tee. Probably a Par 4 around 850'
Looking forward to getting some out of towners to play the new config!
Theres a new course coming to Abilene! ACU has approved funding to put a 9 hole course in the ground just south and west of ACU campus. They just started a disc golf class at ACU this semester and are using a lot of the ciriculum from the E.D.G.E program. Jay Reading will be designing it, and in fact already has 5 of the holes laid out. My understanding is that it will be open to the public. Its located basically right in between Will Hair and Cal Young, and as Im typing this...I think I may have found our series format for next year. 3 courses in one day anyone? :D
Got our date for the Ice Bowl. February 7, 2009 - 10a tee-off. Will be much the same as in years past....players pack (probably a T-shirt), lunch provided by St. James UMC, 2 rounds, unlimited mulligans. $20 each...plus 3 cans of food. Nate Elders will be the TD again this year. Rd. 1 - short pins, Rd. 2 - long pins. I hope to get our super long posistion in for hole 12 before then. And, we have to come up with a new short posistion for hole 2. A big trench was dug off of T&P Lane to help divert water to the creek, and it goes right through 1 and 2 fairway....in the process, they dig up the sleeve for hole 2 :-/
Got the baskets in last week for Will Hair...should have those in the ground pretty soon.
Folks are starting to come up with ideas for where to put tee pads at Will Hair. Good to see people get involved.
Havent talked to Joe Simpson yet...no more news on the club yet.
I havent talked with Gary Duke yet, but I believe the Wild Hair dates will be June 27-28. I base that strictly on the fact that its always the weekend after Fathers Day. NOT confirmed...but pretty sure.
Will Hair baskets have been replaced! The course is whole again :-)
Abilene Ice Bowl February 7, 2009 (saturday after the Super Bowl) $20 entry + 3 cans of food - Pro, Am, Women players package and trophies for the winners (1st, 2nd, and 3rd I believe) rd 1 - 10a, lunch provided, rd 2 - 2p
We will play all short pin positions rd 1, long positions rd 2 (hopefully with the new superlong #12 - 850+ ft). Big nasty Nate Elders is the TD. There are some here that want to make the Eola Ice Bowl, so we put them a few weeks apart to accomodate as many as possible. I for one hope to make both.
One more note....put Apr 30-May 2 on your calenders now. You do NOT want to miss the 2009 Discrazy Shootout, which will be an A-Tier this year. Its the weekend right after the NT event in Tulsa...the time of the year that the National Tour heads west. There will likely be MANY of the top players in the world there. I know Eric McCabe, Jay Reading, and Coda Hatfield will return. Dave Feldberg...Avery Jenkins...maybe Barry Schultz? Dont get me to lie'n....but, its gonna be HUGE. Plan on it NOW.
We got 14 and 9 put in their additional pin placments this weekend. Need to plant long #12 sleeve now and we'll start moving the baskets on a regular basis. The old course measured out at 5,500 ft. All short pins will measure out at just under 5,000 ft. and all long pins will measure out just over 6,000 ft. With 12 super long, the course will measure about 6,400 ft. Now we just need to plant about 100 more tress and Cal Young will be fantastic!
Still in the works. The Rotary club is focusing on one of there other big civic events right now, so I havent met with them recently.
Tenativly, it will be in the Fall....probably around the 1st part of october. Still planning on 2 divisions (those that play more serious and those that play more casual). I want to do a trial run with the format I have in mind one saturday...maybe as a fundraiser for the Wild Hair or something. When I get some more details I will be sure to let you guys know
