I agree...more trees at Will Hair would be nice. Espeically on the first hole, then after you make the turn from up in that corner.(been a while since I have played it, so it's hard for me to remember the hole numbers).
You'll get your chance if you come back this way for the Wild Hair. They say they are going to use Will Hair again!! YEAH!!! June 21st and 22nd I think!
We will see, I will be playing the HOTT Kyle open on June 28th, C tier one day event I believe, on the very nice Kyle course I just played. I don't know if I could make more than one Tourney a month.
Man, I sure wish I could play the Kyle tourney....I had planned to, but then was quickly reminded that, that is Jeanne's B-day weekend. So I am out. Man I do love that Kyle course!!!
As far as the trees, the city donated 21 trees last fall for Cal Young. Gary Neal and I showed the Parks director where we wanted them. The city can buy a tree for $100, way cheaper than the club can. Anyone want to run the Arboria Open again?
Tee pads, tee signs, more trees? I'm all for it. I don’t think anything has ever been done to Will Hair either. Basically, we just need someone to take ownership of that park. I don’t mind consulting and helping facilitate any plans for Will Hair, but I'm involved with disc golf enough in Abilene and the surrounding region…I can't be the head man at both parks in Abilene. I guess I'm kind of considered the head guy around here…nothing really official, but if everyone's ok with that…so be it.
Here's what I think of Will Hair. I think the property at Will Hair has much more potential than the current course layout yields. I love the property, but I think the course could be designed better and in such a way to get at least 3 more baskets out there. I get the idea that most folks would like to leave it the way it is, but would people be up for a redesign? We had a meeting before one of the mini's last summer and discussed lots of different things (course improvements, mini formats, ace pots, etc.). The general consensus was to cap the Will Hair ace pot at $1,000 and let anything extra go towards park improvements. Then, the cap would be $600. I think we raised roughly $1,000 towards the park. We probably should have had some kind of a back up ace pot…and nothing says we can't take some of the extra money out for that. I don’t think we decided what would be done first, just that we needed money to do it.
I will be focused on the Wild Hair and the Park expansion series for most of the year. If there's general agreement on what the Will Hair money needs to be spent on first, by all means…spend it. If no one want's to step up and help get things rolling at Will Hair, that’s ok too. The pace of progress is directly proportional to the number of people willing to lend a hand. (i.e. more people = more progress)
Speaking of more people…here are some questions: Is it time to get our club operating again? Officers, a board, regular meetings, voting on issues? Do we have others who want to have an ACTIVE role in the direction of Abilene Disc Golf? I have the impression that we don't…am I wrong?

I hear you here Jerry. You are, or at least seem to be from a distance, doing a lot up there..and can't be expected to do it all. People always want to throw out ideas and complants, but never want to really help with any of the solutions and/or work.

Clubs, organizations, groups...whatever you want to call them. Most of the time it's the few doing the work for many. Take our work days leading up to the Crush. We had them planned for at least a month before. Several people threw out ideas of what they would like to see done. Very, very few of the ones making the suggestion showed up to the work days. We normally just have the same 10-12 people show up every time(and one of them just moved to Austin).
Keep up the good work Jerry. I am sure it's more appreciated than you are told. I'm just glad Will Hair is going to be included in the Wild Hair this year.
I couldn't tell you who installed and paid for Will Hair, but I was under the impression that it wasn't up for change, as far as placements go. I was just talking about the Aboria Open yesterday and how we need to get another one going in order to raise money for trees. I would be willing to step up and run it. Seeing that the trees are best to plant in the fall, it would be a end of the summer tourney or early fall. I'll check some dates and nail something down.
I also wanted to run an idea past you Jerry and thought about if we replaced some of the single chained baskets and raffled them off in order to raise money to get better baskets. If you did it throughout the series you could get lots of raffle tickets sold and raffle it or them off at the last series event. Anyways an idea.
I think activating the club would help things get moving, we have alot of people playing our courses and no way to unite them into one group of Abilene disc golfers. In the later 90's we had some of the top pros in texas coming to Abilene for tournements, we are talking 1000+ rated players. It's time to put Abilene on the map for Texas disc golf once agian.
Can't you guys just buy some chain a double them up? That's what we did with all 9 baskets in Brentwood...made a big difference, and those are the cheap Lightning baskets. So we did it at the lake course as well since some of them weren't doubled. We ordered the 8" rings like on the Mach Vs and got some S hooks...and waaaalaaa all San Angelo basekts are double chained.
but that is a good idea about raffling them off....
Thanks for the compliments. I never do any disc golf stuff expecting praise, I just do it because I can, people let me, and I enjoy it. I hope to lead by example and maybe others will jump on board..but, I'm not nieve enough to think that that alone will magically get things done. I think I will start getting some club talks going at the minis, maybe we can get something formed this summer...
Whoever wants to run the Arboria, do it. Let me know so we can get the park reserved and so we get a date that doesnt draw from something else.
I have threatened to get some chains added for several months now, but again....too many other things higher on my to-do list. The raffle idea is good, but wouldn't that take a long time going that route? I believe we have 10 of those Innova baskets out there. That's roughly $3,000 to replace them all. It would be more cost effective to add them ourselves. But, if everyone wanted to replace them...thats fine too. Again, its gets back to wanting/needing/allowing everyone's input. The more I thought about it this weekend, the more I think its time to get more heads involved in decisions.
I talked to the head of the Parks Dept. Wednesday and he said that it would cost about $1,200 for 20 tee pads, so we almost have enough for it. And, he approved a permanent placement for Hole 1A...so, we have city approval to move foward.....
HAVING SAID THAT.....
What if I told you that I could totally re-design Will Hair to:
1. Make better use of the land 2. Be more challenging 3. Be more fun 4. Fit at least 3-5 more baskets in the course.. 5. Have the potential for 4-6 more baskets in the future to get a full 18 out there
Yep...this one will wrap up the first half. Then, I will finally be able to start full speed for the Wild Hair. Its likely to fill this year, so if your planning on going, PLEASE sign up early. I want to have as few sign up the morning of as possible. You can mail me a check or whatever...just get your spot taken care of. Peace of mind for you...and way easier on the staff. The Pro, Masters, Adv, and Adv. Masters will be limited to 50 spots so they can fit at Will Hair. I will have host hotel info soon.
30 in each one? I expect roughly the same numbers that were at the Crush. 10 Pro, 25 Adv, 7 Adv. Masters. I'm not expecting any Pro Masters, but I think there will be enough room for everyone regardless. This is also in line with the numbers at last years Wild Hair. If I happen to get way more interest early on in these divisions, I could add 1 more hole to Will Hair, making it 22 total. But, I dont expect that will happen.
mabey not 30 in each one, but if their is 30 in advanced it doesn't leave much room for the other three divisions. I don't know it's your format, I'll just sign up early and then I don't have to worry about it.
The Wild Hair is next up on my schedule...Anyone else plannig on going? Can't wait for this one now...especially since we get to play Will Hair again at it!
Hopefully we'll have a good size CVDGA group up for this one. Great event guys, and some of our biggest supports for the Crush. So let's make sure to return the favor!
Hey Jerry, any word on if there will be new pin placements before the Wild Hair at Cal Young? Seems like you told me you guys were planning on doing that at some point. Would be pretty interesting to play some different holes at Cal Young.
I'll start letting people know you would prefer them to sign up ahead of time. Will there be online registration or just snail mail?
Now that the Cal Young Expansion series is over until July, I can focus on the Wild Hair too!! I plan to have host hotel confirmation and Titledisc registration up this week. Also will send in the sanctioning agreement and get it up on the PDGA site so I can start posting pre-registration lists. I'm a little behind the eight-ball this year so things are not as far along as I wanted them.
It doesnt look like we can get new pin placments in before the Wild Hair. I still hold out hope, but I'm planning on them not being there. I have been to 1 saturday event in the last 5 weeks so I am a little out of touch.
Should have things rolling this week as far as the players go. Then, I will focus on course prep, gathering items for CTP's, Ring of Fire, etc. I apologize for being late with some of these things...
I apologize for being late with some of these things...
No need for apologies...you are a busy man up there running the expansion series.
I'll keep my fingers crossed a few new pin placements get put in before the tourney...if not, I'll have something to be excited for next year(when the other course will hopefully be in as well)!
If you have any info you would like me to pass on about the event, other than the normal info, let me know. I send out a once a week email to about 40 DGers in the area. I'll be hyping up the Wild Hair, and passing on the info from the flyer, but if you have something else just let me know.
Abilene Civic Plaza will again be the host for the Wild Hair. They just remodeled several rooms and are under new management. They have recently gone up in their prices, but we got our bid in several weeks ago so its the same $52 per night it has been. Though it likely will go up next year. Also, the restaurnt has changed and they only serve breakfast now, but its still cook to order and it is less than $5. We have 12 rooms blocked off which should be enough...but I kind of need to keep a running count just incase we start to get close to that number. Contact Gail Camp (General Manager) at 1-800-588-0222 to get the rate. On-line reservation or talking to anyone else will get you the regular rate.
I will update the website with this info and plan on submitting Titledisc info tonight. If you want to go ahead and sign up, you can print a reg. form off the website (in my signature) and mail me the entry. If its a check, just make it out to Jerry Kingston.
